Why is pool water monitoring important?

Swimming pools endure a lot of contamination, especially during the summer months. Bathers introduce contaminants like sweat, dirt, oils, and sunscreen into pool water. Other contaminants come from the surrounding environment such as leaves and insects.

Contaminants reduce pool water quality. They can cause unpleasant odors and discoloration. Some contaminants like pathogenic bacteria can even cause illness and irritation. It is important to remove contaminants whenever possible through the use of chlorine and filtration.

Knowing how much chlorine to use is a complicated matter. The number of swimmers causing pool water contamination fluctuates monthly, daily, and even hourly. Sunlight can reduce chlorine’s effectiveness through UV exposure. Even temperature can affect pool water quality, because some bacteria grow more quickly at temperatures above 80-90°F. All of this variation makes monitoring pool water chemistry essential. Close monitoring allows effective dosing of chlorine and other chemicals to keep pool water safe, clean, and enjoyable.
